ALL NATIONS 2011 COMES TO AN END

International flavoured Volleyball came to Tower Hamlets over the weekend in the form of the 7th All Nations Volleyball Tournament. Some 290 competitors from London and the surrounding areas represented their home nation in an exciting event playing in 130 matches over 2 weekends at Bethnal Green Technology College.

Italians, Germans, French, Polish, Africans, Sri Lankans and others came together in this fiercely competitive but friendly competition. The mens tournament could have gone in any direction, with the top four teams being equally matched. Italy, UK, Africa and Poland were all in with a chance. The final between UK and last years champions Italy went the full 3 sets, with Italy coming out 2-1 winners. This makes three in a row for the Italian men. Congratulations.

The womens competition was equally, if not more exciting, again the title could have gone to any of the top four teams (Poland, Americas, Italy or Eastern Europe). Powerful attacks and athletic defence was on show throughout and the final between Italy and Eastern Europe was a battle of endurance, skill and sheer determination. Tired and aching bodies meant more than normal unforced errors, but grit and determination saw some fantastic recoveries and attacks from both sides. It may have been the more vocal Italian supporters, or the motivation to be the first nation to do the double at the All Nations, that spurred the Italian women on to a 2-1 victory over Eastern Europe. Congratulations.

Local councillor and School Governor Kabir Ahmed was on hand with Derek Cox (School Governor), to present the prizes and commented that it was great to see a local facility being used for such an event, an event which demonstrates community cohesion and the coming together of so many faiths, individuals, nationalities and organisations.

ITALY DO THE DOUBLE

All Nations Volleyball champions for 2012 are **Italy** The experience of the Italian men helped them to overcome the UK in a thrilling 2-1 win.

It was always going to be a exciting final and we weren’t let down. The Italian women battled hard against Eastern Europe and their perseverance and determination paid off . They joined the men to become champions of 2011, with a 2 - 1 win.
